Moving to Long Lake

The City of Long Lake is located 16 miles west of downtown Minneapolis nestled along the shore of picturesque Long and a few minutes north of Lake Minnetonka. Long Lake is a smaller city, home to approximately 1,842 residents and is surrounded by the city of Orono in all directions.

Long Lake is easily accessible via US Highway 12/Interstate 394, the major east/west thoroughfare that passes through the city.

Long Lake is nearly all residential and is also home to 254 businesses and 1.143 jobs. The city’s only retail and commercial area is centered on the intersection of Wayzata Boulevard and Willow Drive. This quaint area features Otten Brothers Nursery, Anytime Fitness, Lakeside Wine Shop, Caribou Coffee, a few casual dining options and several other commercial businesses. Additional shopping can be found in nearby Wayzata, which is home to more than 150 unique retail specialty shops, antique stores, children’s stores, upscale boutiques, salons, fine jewelry, home furnishing stores and commercial businesses. Wayzata also features several popular restaurants, ranging from upscale elegant to casual.

Long Lake offers a variety of recreational opportunities through its network of four parks and trails. Nelson Lake Park, located along the shores of Long Lake, features a public boat launch, swimming beach, picnic areas and a large playground for neighborhood children. The Luce Line State Trail, a 63 mile long former railroad, traverse just south of the city and is popular for biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and skiing. The limestone surfaced trail runs from Plymouth 30 miles west to Winsted with a parallel tread way for horseback riding. Additionally, one of the most popular lakes in the region, Lake Minnetonka, is located just a few minutes south of the city. At over 14,000 acres, Lake Minnetonka is made up of numerous bays, inlets and channels and features over 125 miles of shoreline. The lake is popular for boating, sailing, fishing and swimming.

Long Lake is also home to the Pioneer Museum run by the West Hennepin County Pioneer association. This area landmark was founded by the original settlers of western Hennepin County and operated now by their descendants. The popular museum promotes local heritage and features community and family related artifacts dating back over 100 years.

Long Lake is served by the Orono Public School System, a small and excellent school system that also serves the surrounding communities of Independence, Orono, Maple Plain, Medina, and Minnetonka Beach. The Orono School District is conveniently organized into four schools on a 120-acre central campus nestled against 2,000 feet of lakeshore along Lake Classen in the city of Orono, just to the south of Long Lake. The campus contains Schumann Elementary School, Orono Intermediate School, Orono Middle School and Orono High School
